As part of the deal, the two companies announced a joint venture in which Stellantis has 51% control, giving the European automaker exclusive rights to manufacture zero-run vehicles outside of China.Stellantis chief executive Tang Weishi said at the time that the zero run car will enter the European market in two years at most. Production of the Zero Car in Italy could start as early as 2026 or 2027, the people said.
In response to a question at last week’s earnings conference, Tang Weizhi said that if there were sufficient business reasons, Stellantis could make zero running cars in Italy. He said: “It all depends on our cost competitiveness and quality competitiveness. So, we can seize this opportunity at any time.”A Stellantis spokesman said the company had no further comment on Mr. Tang’s comments last week.Stellantis currently produces 500BEV small vehicles at the Mirafioriplant. Allocating production of the Zeros to the Mirafiori plant could help Stellantis achieve its goal with the Italian government to increase the group’s production in Italy to 1 million vehicles by 2030 from 750 thousand last year. Production targets in Italy will depend on a number of factors, including incentives for bus purchases, the development of an electric vehicle charging network and reductions in energy costs, the group said.
