Peruvian local news agency Andina quoted Peruvian Foreign Minister Javier González-Olaechea as reporting that BYD is considering setting up an assembly plant in Peru to make full use of the strategic cooperation between China and Peru around the Chancay port.

In June this year, Peruvian President Dina Ercilia Boluarte Zegarra visited China, and the friendship between China and Peru accelerated. A key element of Peru’s cooperation with China is the establishment of a free trade agreement. In addition, China and Peru have also launched the Chancay Port project, in which China Ocean Shipping holds 60%. When completed, the port will become “the gateway from South America to Asia.”
On June 26, Dina Ercilia also visited Shenzhen, where BYD and Huawei are headquartered, and after meeting with the two companies, she mentioned that BYD may build a factory in Peru.
Peruvian Foreign Minister Javier González-Olaechea said that Shenzhen is the most important digital technology center in China, and his visit to BYD and Huawei headquarters left a deep impression on him. The Peruvian Foreign Minister also mentioned that BYD has expressed the possibility of establishing assembly plants in Peru and two other Latin American countries.
Previously, BYD was also exploring the possibility of establishing electric vehicle factories in Mexico and Brazil. These two countries have also established good diplomatic relations with China. In May 2024, BYD began building a manufacturing base in Brazil. The plant will begin operations in early 2025 with an initial production capacity of 150,000 vehicles. In June 2024, Mexican officials also stated that negotiations surrounding BYD‘s production plant had entered the final stage.
Since Peru borders Brazil, if BYD establishes an assembly plant in Peru, it will better promote BYD‘s development in the market. In addition, the Peruvian minister did not confirm that BYD will establish a passenger car production plant in Peru. So BYD has many options: buses, batteries, trains and auto parts.
In March this year, BYD launched the Shark pickup truck in Mexico, priced at 899,980 Mexican pesos (approximately US$53,400). This is a plug-in hybrid car about the same size as the Hilux model, with a power of 429 horsepower and an acceleration time of 0 to 100 kilometers in 5.7 seconds.
