On June 25, Chinese automaker BYD announced the launch of its third electric vehicle in the Japanese market, which will be the company's most expensive sedan model to date.
BYD, headquartered in Shenzhen, has begun accepting orders for BYD's Seal electric vehicle (known abroad as "Seal EV") in Japan from June 25. The rear-wheel drive version of the BYD Seal electric car has a suggested retail price in Japan of 5.28 million yen (approximately 240,345 yuan). In comparison, the starting price of this model in China is 179,800 yuan.
BYD's expansion in the Japanese market, which has long been known for its loyalty to local brands, could raise concerns among domestic automakers as they already face BYD and Chinese rivals in the Chinese market. fierce competition from other electric vehicle brands.
Currently, BYD has only launched battery-powered cars in the Japanese market and has not yet launched plug-in hybrids and other cars using other power system technologies. This is different from BYD's strategy in the Chinese market. In the Chinese market, BYD has not only launched a variety of pure electric vehicles, but also actively expanded into the plug-in hybrid vehicle market.
BYD said in a press release that it plans to offer rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions of its Seal EV in Japan, both of which will be equipped with a high-performance 82.56-kilowatt-hour battery pack. BYD's rear-wheel drive Seal has a range of 640 kilometers (398 miles in total), while BYD's all-wheel drive Seal, priced at 6.05 million yen, can travel 575 kilometers on a single charge.
BYD launched the Yuan PLUS (known abroad as "Atto 3") and Dolphin electric cars in Japan last year. Sales of these two cars in Japan last year were about 2,500.
