A strategic shift toward electric vehicles
Hyundai Motor Company has made significant progress in the electric vehicle (EV) sector, with its plant in Izmit, Turkey, to produce both EVs
and internal combustion engine vehicles from 2026. This strategic move is aimed at meeting the growing demand for sustainable mobility solutions in the European market. The company has recognized the need to adapt to the changing automotive landscape, in which new energy vehicles (NEVs) are becoming increasingly important.
Hyundai Motor stressed in a recent press release that the electric vehicles produced at the Izmit plant will enhance its growing electric vehicle product line and meet consumers’ growing demand for environmentally friendly transportation options. The plant, which has an annual production capacity of 245,000 units, will continue to produce popular models such as the i10, i20 and Bayon small crossover, while also expanding its production capacity to include electric vehicle production.
Cooperation and future prospects
To support its ambitious plans, Hyundai Motor Group has taken proactive steps to place orders for electric motor parts from supplier POSCO. In January 2024, the company placed an order for 550,000 parts, which are expected to be delivered to the Izmit plant in 2034. The partnership highlights Hyundai’s commitment to increasing electric vehicle production capacity and ensuring a stable supply of key components.
The transformation of the Izmit plant is more than just a local initiative; it reflects a broader trend in the global automotive industry. Hyundai’s efforts in Turkey align with the growing emphasis on electric vehicles as countries around the world turn to sustainable transportation. The plant, which was previously operated by Hyundai Asan Motor (a joint venture with Turkey’s Kibar Holding), has been fully integrated into Hyundai’s operations since Kibar transferred its shares in 2020. The plant was renamed Hyundai Motor Turkey, marking its increased presence in the global automotive sector.
The world turns to new energy vehicles
The rise of new energy vehicles is not limited to Hyundai’s initiatives in Turkey, but part of a larger transformation in the global automotive industry. As the world’s largest electric vehicle market, China has been at the forefront of this transformation, attracting international attention with its innovative technologies and strong production capabilities. The Chinese government has set an ambitious goal of electric vehicles accounting for 50% of new car sales by 2035. This policy has catalyzed rapid growth in the domestic market and opened up new paths for international automakers.
Chinese electric vehicle brands such as BYD, NIO, and Xpeng continue to gain global market attention with their high cost-performance and advanced technology. Breakthroughs in battery technology, smart driving, and connected vehicles have made China a key player in the global battery supply chain. Manufacturers such as CATL and BYD are driving
improvements in electric vehicle range and charging efficiency, making new energy vehicles more acceptable and attractive to consumers.
Call for global participation
As the automotive industry undergoes unprecedented changes, countries around the world must embrace new energy vehicles. The rise of new energy vehicles not only represents a victory for technology, but also a key step towards sustainable development. As the world pays more attention to environmental protection and emission reduction, investing in electric vehicles is essential to combat climate change and improve air quality.
International buyers and automakers should seize the opportunity to participate in the booming new energy vehicle market. Whether by purchasing electric vehicles or partnering with innovative companies, the industry has huge potential for growth and development. Continued technological advances and market expansion provide countries with a unique opportunity to become leaders in the transition to sustainable transportation.
In short, the future of the automotive industry will be greener, smarter and more sustainable. Hyundai’s move in Turkey, coupled with China’s rapid progress in electric vehicle technology, highlights the global enthusiasm for new energy vehicles. All countries must join this movement and take advantage of the opportunities brought by the electric vehicle revolution. By doing so, we can jointly contribute to a more sustainable future for future generations.
