California Lawmakers Want Automakers to Limit Speed

California Sen. Scott Wiener introduced legislation that would have automakers install devices in cars that would limit the top speed of vehicles to 10 miles per hour, the legal speed limit, Bloomberg reported. He said the move would enhance public safety and reduce the number of accidents and deaths caused by speeding. At the Bloomberg New energy resources finance summit on Jan. 31, Senator Scott Wiener, Democrat of San Francisco, said, “The speed of the car is too fast. More than 4,000 Californians died in car crashes in 2022, a 22 percent increase from 2019.” He added, “This is not normal. Other rich countries don’t have this problem.”

Scott Winer introduced a bill last week that he said would make Galafonia the first state in the country to require car manufacturers to add speed limits by 2027. “California should take the lead on this.” Scott Winer said.In addition, the European Union will mandate the use of the technology in all vehicles sold later this year, and some local governments in the United States, such as Ventura County, California, have now required their fleets to use the technology. The proposal once again demonstrates that California lawmakers are not afraid to use state mandates to achieve public policy goals. Although California is known for its innovative regulations, such as a plan to ban the sale of new gasoline-powered cars by 2035, conservative critics see them as too draconian, viewing California as a “nanny state” where lawmakers overreach.
