Battery startup Sion Power names new CEO

According to foreign media reports, former General Motors executive Pamela Fletcher will succeed Tracy Kelley as CEO of electric vehicle battery startup Sion Power Corp. Tracy Kelley will serve as Sion Power’s president and chief scientific officer, focusing on the development of battery technology.

Pamela Fletcher said in a statement that Sion Power’s goal is to commercialize lithium metal anode materials for widespread use in electric vehicles. Pamela Fletcher said: “This commercialization means consumers will have faster access to more affordable electric vehicles, promoting the uptake of electric vehicles and ultimately helping us move closer to a zero-emission world.”

In January this year, Sion Power received a total of US$75 million in funding from investors including global battery manufacturer LG Energy Solution to advance the research and development of its proprietary lithium metal battery technology for electric vehicles.

In 1984, 17-year-old Pamela Fletcher began studying mechanical engineering at General Motors Research Institute and received a bachelor’s degree. She also earned a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Wayne State University and completed executive education programs at Northwestern University, Harvard University and Stanford University.

Pamela Fletcher has extensive experience in electric vehicle batteries. During her 15 years at GM, she held multiple leadership positions, including vice president of global innovation and electric vehicles. Pamela Fletcher was responsible for making GM’s electric vehicle business profitable and spearheaded the revamp of the 2016 Chevrolet Volt. Pamela Fletcher has also been involved in the development of Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles and Volt hybrid vehicles, as well as the development of Super Cruise technology.

In addition, Pamela Fletcher has also been responsible for managing 20 startups under General Motors, 5 of which have been listed, including GM Defense and OnStar Insurance. Additionally, Pamela Fletcher’s team has developed the Future Roads service, which provides anonymized vehicle data to help government agencies improve road safety and maintenance.

In February 2022, Pamela Fletcher resigned from General Motors and began to serve as the chief sustainability officer of Delta Airlines. As of August this year, she was working for Delta Air Lines.

Pamela Fletcher was named to Automotive News’ 2015 and 2020 list of the 100 Outstanding Women in the North American Automotive Industry. Pamela Fletcher was a member of Automotive News’ all-star lineup in 2015, when she served as General Motors’ executive chief engineer for electrified vehicles.
