In response to the EU's countervailing case against China's electric vehicles and to further deepen cooperation in the China-EU electric vehicle industry chain, Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao
hosted a seminar in Brussels, Belgium. The event brought together key stakeholders from both regions to discuss the future of the electric vehicle industry, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and mutual development. Wang Wentao emphasized that cooperation is crucial to the development of the Chinese and European automobile industries. China-EU automobile industry exchanges have lasted for more than 40 years, with fruitful results and deep integration.
The seminar highlighted the long-term partnership between China and Europe in the automotive field, which has developed into a mutually beneficial and symbiotic relationship. European companies are booming in the Chinese market, driving the development of China's automotive industry chain. At the same time, China provides European companies with an open market and a level playing field. This kind of cooperation is the cornerstone of industry development. The most significant feature is collaboration, the most valuable experience is competition, and the most fundamental foundation is a fair environment. Trams are bound to become popular around the world.
1.Environmental sustainability of electric vehicles.
Electric vehicles produce no tailpipe emissions and can significantly reduce air pollution and combat climate change. This is particularly important as both China and Europe work to reduce their carbon footprints. Electric vehicles can also harness renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, further reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This is consistent with global efforts to transition to clean energy and create a more sustainable future.
2.Electric vehicle operating efficiency
Unlike internal combustion engines, which are inherently less efficient, electric motors reduce energy consumption and increase energy efficiency. Electric vehicles can capture and convert kinetic energy during braking, extending their driving range and improving overall efficiency. This technological advantage not only makes electric vehicles more sustainable but also more suitable for daily use, thereby enhancing their appeal to consumers in both regions.
The economic benefits of electric vehicles were also a focus of the seminar.
Fuel costs for electric vehicles are generally lower than for traditional vehicles because electricity is cheaper than gasoline or diesel. Additionally, electric vehicles have fewer moving parts than internal combustion engine vehicles, which means maintenance requirements and costs decrease over time. These economic advantages make electric vehicles an attractive option for consumers and contribute to the overall growth of the industry.
3.Enhanced driving experience provided by electric vehicles.
The electric motor delivers instant torque, providing brisk acceleration and a smoother ride. Additionally, electric vehicles run quietly compared to internal combustion engine vehicles, creating a quieter driving environment. These features not only improve the driving experience but also contribute to the growing popularity of electric vehicles among consumers.
The development of electric vehicles in China is remarkable, and we have achieved important milestones over more than ten years. China has become the world's largest electric vehicle market, with cumulative sales of electric buses accounting for 45% of the world's total, and sales of electric buses and trucks accounting for more than 90% of the world's total. China's leading mass-produced power battery technology and its active role in electric travel business model innovation have made it a leader in the global electric vehicle industry.
The development of China's electric vehicle industry can be divided into three historical stages. The first stage is from the 1960s to 2001, which is the embryonic period of electric vehicle technology and the initial exploration and development of electric vehicle technology. The second phase has developed rapidly in the past ten years, driven by the continuous, orderly and systematic R&D support of the national "863 Plan". During this period, the Chinese government launched new energy vehicle pilot projects in many cities across the country, promoting the vigorous development of the electric vehicle industry through R&D investment and direct subsidies.
The third stage is characterized by the rapid progress of my country’s electric vehicle industry in recent years. There are currently about 200 electric vehicle companies in China, 150 of which were established in the past three years. The surge in the number of companies has led to intensified competition and innovation, with the emergence of well-known technology companies and mass brands such as BYD, Lantu Automobile, and Hongqi Automobile. These brands have gained wide recognition at home and abroad, demonstrating the strength and potential of China's electric vehicle industry.
Finally, the China-EU Electric Vehicle Industry Seminar held in Brussels emphasized the importance of continued cooperation and common development in the field of electric vehicles. The discussion highlighted the environmental sustainability, operational efficiency, economic benefits and enhanced driving experience of electric vehicles. The significant growth of China's electric vehicle industry, driven by government support and innovation, demonstrates the potential of the electric vehicle market. As China and Europe continue to collaborate and address challenges such as EU countervailing cases, the future of the electric vehicle industry looks promising and both regions will benefit from this partnership.
